  • Do I need to have prior experience with aikido or another martial art?
Absolutely not! Adults of all ages, genders, fitness levels, and experience levels are welcome. We all have to start somewhere!
  • What should I wear to class?
Wear something comfortable that you can move in, understanding that you will get some exercise during class. Sweat pants and a t-shirt are a great place to start. I recommend long sleeves and pants. If you happen to have a gi (practice uniform), you are encouraged to wear it. Please remove all jewelry prior to getting on the mat. A plain wedding band is fine, but anything else should be taken off/out for safety during practice. No shoes on the mat. Most people practice barefoot, but it's okay if you'd prefer to wear socks. That said, shoes, flip-flops, or something similar should be worn off the mat and removed at its edge. This keeps our practice surface clean.
  • What does a typical class look like?
Here's an outline of a typical class. Warm-ups -- simple movements and stretches to get the blood flowing Ki Exercises -- aikido-based movement patterns that reinforce techniques and allow us to work on balance and posture Falling and Rolling Practice -- Falling safely is an important part of aikido practice, and we will teach you how to do so comfortably and reliably. Don't be nervous; we'll ease you into your falls and rolls gradually, at your pace. Techniques -- This is the bulk of class. The instructor will demonstrate a particular aikido technique and explain how to execute it. Then students will practice the technique together, usually in pairs. You and your partner will take turns attacking and defending so that together you learn both aspects of the technique cooperatively. After some time practicing a technique, the instructor will move on to the next one, repeating the process.
